XC Timer is an iPhone app for hand-timing races at the finish line. Tap once as each runner crosses, then add names during or after the race and share the results.
Getting started
- Create a meet. All it needs is a name. It can start with a set of youth races, or you can add your own.
- Open a race and tap START the moment the race begins. Already started? Set how long ago it began instead.
- Tap as each runner crosses the line. Each tap records a finish time, and every tap is saved right away.
- Hold to end when the last runner is in.
- Add names and share. Tap a time to name that runner, then share the results as a spreadsheet or PDF.
Common questions
Do I need a roster?
No. Rosters are optional, and names can be added after the race, or not at all. If you have a roster, you can paste it from a spreadsheet, email or text, or import a CSV file, and runners are sorted into races by grade and gender.
I missed a runner or tapped twice. Can I fix it?
Yes. While timing, use “Undo last tap” or “Missed one?”. After the race, touch and hold any time to edit it, delete a stray tap, add a runner who wasn’t tapped, or disqualify a runner.
I tapped START by mistake.
Until the first finish is recorded, the timer shows “Undo start”, which puts the race back to not started.
What if the app closes or my phone locks mid-race?
Every tap is saved as it happens, and the race clock keeps running. Reopen the app and it goes straight back to the timer. While a race is running, the clock also shows on the lock screen.
Where are my results stored?
Only on your iPhone. XC Timer has no accounts and doesn’t upload anything. Results leave the phone only when you share a file, and they’re included in your phone’s regular backups. See the privacy policy.
What does it need?
An iPhone running iOS 17 or later. No internet connection is needed.
